Weighing Your Options: The Pros of Getting a Used Car and a Brand New Car

SubaruOwning a car has always been among the penultimate dream of anyone who’s starting to be an adult. After all, in America, people can’t survive without a car since public transport isn’t always practical or possible. With the hassles and the news of increase in car and gas prices, buying a car is always a wise choice. And yet, despite the definite advantage of owning a car, it can still be said that deciding whether to buy a brand new car or new car is not as convenient as deciding whether you should buy a car or not.

There are many reasons why this decision can be potentially tricky. Of course, it helps that statistic say around two-thirds of car buyers opts for used cars rather than brand new cars, but this isn’t enough reason for the critical buyer. To be fair, there are several advantages to owning a brand new car and a used car, and both sets of pros can be good enough reason to choose either.

Of course, when you buy a brand new car, you get reduced maintenance costs, definite warranty coverage, and road assistance. For obvious reasons, new cars do not need to get maintained until after several months—or even months—besides the oil change and the required tune-up. Brand new cars also get covered by manufacturer warranties which could last for around two to three years. Manufacturers also offer road assistance to car owners. Therefore, in case of any car malfunction in the middle of the road, you can simply call the manufacturer’s road assistance hotline to get immediate help, which is often available round the cloud. This is a kind of convenient protection used cars do not have, since their warranties most probably lapsed several years before the sale. All these add to your peace of mind.

But this is not to say you should discount the possibility of owning a used car. Buying a used car can widen your range when it comes to car choices. Since the prices are lower, it opens up opportunities for people with limited budget. Used cars are also becoming more and more reliable, since warranties can be transferred to new owners (if they are still active). Also, it is easier to repair used cars today, and the choices are currently more varied in terms of car types and the quality of the car.

Buying a used car can be just like buying a new one, especially if you know how to choose wisely. The idea of getting a used car may not be so appealing, but the benefits of buying previously-owned vehicles can definitely change your opinion.
